Etsy Front Page!

Yesterday morning i was pleasantly surprised by a bunch of new hearts on Etsy. What was going on? Then i noticed one of my needle felted cupcake cuties had a lot of new fans too. It must have been on the front page and i missed it! But luckily there is the wonderful Flickr Pool where they collect Etsy Front Page screenshots. Voila!

There was no name listed as curator of this collection of items, so i guess it was one of the Etsy admins who picked my cutie. Thank you so very much. I'm honored and it was a fun rush feeling!

Bookstore and Winner

Made a quick visit to Barnes & Noble today to pick up a christmas gift for my love. Wondered off to the crafts section and spotted my book on the shelves! It was a funny feeling seeing my work displayed. There were only 2 copies, did they stock only a few or did they flew off the shelves?

Speaking of my book, the giveaway has ended and a random number generator picked a winner! Comment number 19 is the lucky one: Catherine! I will send you an email to get your mailing address.

Those who didn't win, you can ofcourse get your copy at your local bookstore, or order it from my site and get a signed copy!

Craftershock Review

No matter how happy i am with my own work, i think reviews are a scary thing. What if the people doing the review don't like what you did? When you sit down and read it and it says they hated it? Luckily this didn't happen. There's a review of my book on the Craftershock blog! Visit the site to read what they have to say (good things!) and to check out some preview pages!

Scraps and Tags

It's not too late to get some pretty tags to adorn your gifts with this holiday season! There are a couple of vintage image tag sets in my shop right now. And you can use them after the holidays on regular gifts too!

I made a whole bunch of scrap packs so you can use the vintage comic images in your own creative craft projects! They are all stuffed with approx 35 scraps, some single images, some have multiple images. All original pieces, so the backsides have images on them also. I will list these packs later today, so stay tuned!

Publish your book - taking questions!

December 9th is the official release date of my first craft book "100 applique motifs". I am very chuffed about it. How amazing would it be to walk into the bookstore and see my work there?
I know there are a lot of talented crafters out there who would like to share their skills and have their creations published. Today i'm here to answer questions.

I don't pretend to be an expert after my first book, but i have learned a lot through this whole experience.
So if there is anything you would like to know, just leave a comment. I will start here with a bit of my story and will add on to this post as questions come in.

Without wanting to discourage anyone to pursue their dream, i must be honest here. No matter how spiritually rewarding it is to have finished a whole book of crafts and have it published, it is a lot of hard work. And you won't be instantly rich & famous when you're done. You don't see alot of craftbooks (if any) on the New York Times Best Seller List. You will have to dive deep into your creativity and you will hit a couple of points where you are asking yourself why you are doing this and if you are able to ever get it done.
But when you persevere, you will get out on top and you will be extremely proud of yourself.

When you think you got the best idea ever for a new craft book, walk into a big bookstore and head to the craft section. See what is already out there and ask yourself the question if your book idea would be more of the same or would it bring something new to the bookshelf? These days it feels like there are amazing craftbooks published every day. You want your book to stand out and give the readers something that they won't find in all the other books.

Writing your own book is not only a lot of work, it also takes a lot of time. So be passionate about the subject. You will spend a lot of time working on it, and add a lot of waiting time to that.
To give you an idea, i first started talking with my publisher about the possibility of a book in July of 2007 (!). Soon after that i started writing my synopsis and setting up a presentation. Next followed a period of anticipation, waiting for the green light. I got the approval in November of 2007 and was able to sign my name on the dotted line! Then the actual work started. My publisher and i divided it in three batches, two with designs and projects and one with the actual writing. Early April most of the work was done and i flew to London (where my publisher is based) to shoot the step by step photos and a number of project shots. Back in NY i needed to finish and redo a couple of designs. Final stage was filled with proofreading and waiting. And more waiting. And some more. It wasn't until early October that i saw the first advance copies of the book.
Add distribution time and you'll get to the release date of December 9th, 2008. So all in all, almost a year and a half from start to finish.

I feel lucky that the people i worked with at my publisher are all extremely sweet and supportive of me and my work. I got a lot of artistic freedom as to what i wanted to put in the book. But i also loved it to have had a team of people that weren't only cheering me on, but were also thinking with me. When you are in such a big project, it's nice to have people who know the book business look at it and give you tips on things to add or take out.

So if there is anything you would like to know about getting your book out there in the world, ask away! I will try and answer any questions to the best of my knowledge from my experiences and if i don't know, i will say so and try to find the answer for you. Go ahead, shoot!

Will i do a booktour? - As it looks now, no i won't. Nowadays booktours are not very often done anymore. Especially not for craftbooks. What does sometimes happen is that authors go and give workshops, where they then also do booksignings. I might one day do something like that, maybe not. If so, this blog will be the first place i will announce it!

Own the Hour test

I listed my first two ads on Own the Hour, the recently launched promotion site for etsy artists. The ads were both for one of my decorated Moleskine Journals. The ads run for an hour, i got slots at 5 and 7 pm yesterday evening. The moleskine was already listed on Etsy and thus already had a number of views. To be exact, at 5pm sharp, the journal had 273 views and 11 hearts (and not sold yet!).
After the first hour on Own the Hour, there had been 273 views. So a grand total of zero additional views.
After the second hour the stats were 275 views and 11 hearts.

I don't know how many visitors the Own the Hour site has, or what their average click through ratio is. So i'm not sure if this being a holiday weekend has something to do with the low amount of views on my item. Or maybe nobody liked it enough to click on it? Then again, i do know a site has to have a huge amount of visitors to get a lot of clickthroughs in a span of just one hour time. I wasn't expecting a whirlwind of new visitors with an ad for one item that only runs 60 minutes. I was hoping on a little bit more than 2, of which i can't even say for sure those came through the Own the Hour ad.

The ad system is still in Beta phase but i can say that it is very easy to use and not very expensive. The only thing is that you can only buy ads for one certain day (two days ahead), slots fill up quickly so you basically have to be ready at midnight (EST) to get an hourspot for a decent time. Night slots are available a bit longer, but then again, we're all so international, so maybe those nighttime slots aren't that bad if you also want to target customers in different timezones.

I will give it another try and to compare i'll go for spots on a non-holiday weekday and during office hours. I'll keep you posted on future experiences.

3 Of the 4 decorated Moleskine journals recently listed in my Etsy shop.

Ismoyo in Japanese!

So finally i can reveal what i was cryptically talking about last week! I am featured in NYJapion! A Japanese newspaper here in New York. My felted cupcake cuties even made it onto the front page!

I think it is so hilarious since i can't read a word of it! I was contacted by one of their reporters and he came over to do an interview and make some photos of me and my crafts.

A picture of my revamped letterpress drawer is on the second page, with an article about Cosplay.

Why is it that you have to have your photo taken just a week before your appointment at the hairdresser? I really do look better now. Is it really me or just a bad picture? I know... i'm too vain. I don't want to be.

The complete story is currently online on the NYJapion site too. I used google translate to get some sort of English version (scroll down). Even with this translation it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. And why does "Ismoyo Green" translates into "chair MOYO Green"? It does make me chuckle and the newspaper is a wonderful keepsake for me.

It's out this week, distributed free in Japanese grocery stores and restaurants throughout the city.

Planting seeds to achieve

Dreaming big and planting seeds to achieve those dreams really does work.
I have been planting seeds for so long now and it feels like its time to start seeing those dreams flourish. I'm bursting to tell about something that happened to me, but i don't want to jinx it.

There are times you try to achieve something, work hard for it, you are planting a seed. Even if it doesn't work out, then that seed is still out there and without you being aware, it does grow and one day you get a phonecall, or in my case, an email.

Sometimes you dream about something and maybe the dream is really big, maybe too big for now, but still possible in the future, doesn't mean the seed planted by that dream is lost, it will bring you what is right for now.

Sometimes you're goal is far ahead and you know there are steps that can lead you there but those steps are not clear yet, only your main focus is. But being focused is also planting seeds. The universe works for you. You shouldn't get discouraged if things take a long time. It's all preparation, by yourself and the world around you has to be prepped too. And then out of nowhere it comes across your path and you know this was one of those unclear next steps you had to take.

I know, all very cryptic. Last week i wrote "Adventures and new projects will find you when you are walking in the right direction." It was very profound when two days after that a new adventure happened. I do hope to be able to make more sense very soon. As soon as the Jinx-risk is over!

My crafts in print!

I think yesterday was the best mail day ever! Ever. In my life. My publisher sent me the first advance copies of my craft book! "100 Applique motifs. Cute, creative ways to enjoy applique". It was such a long journey and seeing all that hard work all finished in print is so rewarding i don't even know how to express it.

There are different covers for different parts of the world. I'm still waiting to see one cover in person, but i bet i will love it as much as these two. I posted the first cover on my blog before and now i can reveal another one. I like them both, but i think this second one is a little bit more 'me'. Or maybe that's because it's new to me too. I'm not sure and it doesn't matter, since i adore them both the same. It was tough to design all projects but not designing the covers myself.

(from the back of the book:) 100 Applique Motifs
All the instructions, tips and super-cute patterns needed to create hundreds of projects.
Crammed with scores of easily transferable designs, 100 Applique Motifs allows you to customize everything from T-shirts and skirts to bed linens and bags, hats, neckties - even quilts!

From cute creatures to funky fruits, funny florals, adorable critters, retro motifs and "cutting edge" modern designs, you will find endless mix-and-match possibilities in 100 Applique Motifs, in addition to a full-range of stand-alone designs. Each applique motif is shown in full color, color wave (fabric selection), method of construction (including embellishment) and black-and-white illustration. Bonus gallery sections provide ways to mix and match the applique, in addition to extra project ideas, Additional sections include: tools and materials, tips and techniques, a design and pattern directory and an index.
No prior experience with applique required!

I hope that people will enjoy my book and all the projects and templates inside as much as i enjoyed putting it all together. If you want to pre-order your own signed copy, you can do that in my shop of course!

Balance between business and crafts

Turning your creativity into a business means you actually have to spend time on building that business. A trip to city hall to register your business is the easy part. Finding a balance between creating and getting your business running is much harder.

I love having my own business, i love earning a living by being creative. But to find the balance? That's whats the hardest part for me. I tried scheduling a couple of hours each day to focus on building the business, leaving the rest of the day to create. I tried. This doesn't work for me. I loose myself (and time!) in what i do. If i'm on a roll working on my crafts or illustrations, i don't keep track of what the clock says. If the creative flow is there, i need to take advantage of it. Same goes for business related tasks. The only thing i love to not have to do, is administration, especially when tax time is there. If there is anything that depresses me about having your own business it's taxes.

Other tasks you can expect to have to focus on when you turn your creativity into a business are:
Marketing - Promoting your business, getting the word out. Be active on forums, post on your own blog and leave comments on other blogs, analyse visitor stats, design promo items like freebies and businesscards, newsletters, and submit links to sites/magazines/blogs.
Inventory - What you have in stock. Build up stock levels and keep track of it, analyze what works and what doesn't. Make sure you have enough supplies, photograph your products, weigh them to calculate shipping, write product descriptions, upload to site.
Customer Care - Treat your customers as your new best friends. Answer emails promptly and have a clear Faq on your site.
Paperwork - Like i said, my least favorite of tasks. but when tax time comes, you'll be happy and proud of yourself if you did keep a good overview of inventory, sales and expenses.
Processing Orders - This is what all your hard work is for, getting your items to your customers! Packing orders, writing personal thank you notes, get packages to the post office (hopefully lots of trips to the PO).

In a perfect tale there would be an amazing assistant doing these things so there would be time for me to only focus on creating. But this is a one-woman-show. I always end up wishing i did more and thinking i could have done more.

Another thing is that there isn't a boss that keeps you on track. Being your own boss is a luxury, but you do have to keep yourself motivated and disciplined. My motto is, if i can work hard for a boss, i can work even harder for myself.

A couple of tips to manage your time:
- Try not to work on lots of things at the same time, focus on one thing until it's finished and start the next. This way you give everything the attention it deserves.
- Keep a reasonable to do list and cross out tasks as they get done. Reasonable in a way that you have all urgent and important things to do, but without overwhelming yourself.
- I like to group tasks that relate and do them back to back. Like a marketing morning or an administration afternoon.
- Make sure you give yourself some downtime. Take a 15 minute breather with a cup of tea and your favorite magazine or go for a short walk, great to get new inspiration and you'll feel refreshed and energized to get back to work.
- An online presence (being on forums and blogs) is important, but beware, it's easy to get 'addicted' and before you know it you've spend half the day reading amazing blogs. (trust me, i've been there)

What do you do to manage your time?

Making It!

If you have visited the Heart Handmade Blog this past week you might have read about it already: "The Making It series". Today, finally, i can announce that i'm honored to be part of this series. I love the passionate subtitle of it: "Four designers. For stories. One common goal... To make it in the world of handmade."

I can't promise you that after the 12 weeks that this series will run, i will 'have it made', but i will promise you to give some more insight as to what i'm doing in regards to my crafts and my business. The ups and downs. The struggles and the positive breaks.

Read my introduction here and also visit the other designers involved, Dana, Tina and Kristina.

Shop Adventures

Ok. Shop Adventures. I'm not running to the postoffice arms filled with packages yet. I got a small number of orders in of which almost all were pre-orders for my upcoming craft book. (yeah) I am not complaining, starting out takes time. I am very grateful to get a lot of very positive feedback on my shop and the items i've made. It makes me very happy to hear that there are people believing in me and my creativity.
I'm very much trying to promote my shop, get to word out and hopefully i'll have some more to tell on this soon.
In the meantime i have finally listed some items in my Etsy shop too. For a while it has just been there. Empty. So i'm starting to get views on my products there too. No sales yet but i am confident. Of course my website shop is my main priority, but you can't get around the fact that Etsy is a great venue to reach a lot of people who otherwise hadn't discovered my shop yet. And those are mostly people who already have an interest in handmade goodies and have respect and love for the craftsmanship that goes into making your products.

I am happy to say i have gained a number of 'hearts' already. For those who don't know, a heart stands for someone who has put your shop into their favorites. Right now i'm at 30 hearts. You have an Etsy store? C'mon, give me another heart! You know you want to! ;)
The only thing (besides having to pay fees, i'm just being honest here) that i don't like about etsy is that you can't put a counter on your pages. I am a statistics addict! Something i got from the times i worked for internet companies, learning the importance of knowing your audience and where they come from. Luckily i have discovered the Heart-o-Tron on Majaba. You can type in your etsy username and it gives you a list of all your hearts on your shop, and there is also the option to check all your items with their separate hearts and number of views! Not a lot of stat info, but it's something and it looks like Etsy is thinking about offering some kind of statistics in the future. We'll see.

I also got my first feature in an Etsy Treasury! One of my cupcake cuties made the sweet list set up by QPdoll. I can't say i'm such an Etsy expert that i already exactly understand how those Treasuries work, but i do know it's flattering, and it makes me feel happy. So it's a good thing! And i think that if you would ever want to make the Etsy homepage, your item should first be listed in someones Treasury?
Anyway, thank you QPdoll!

Now Open!

I will be doing some layout tweaking still, but the time has (finally) come: I've opened up my online ismoyo shop!

There are some things waiting to still be added real soon. Like more crochet pillows that are nearly finished, pretty sketchbooks and a batch of reversible totebags that only need to be photographed. Plus everything else that will come out of future creative vibes.

Guess now it's getting time to put a couple of items on the etsy page i had registered a long time ago too. ;)

Another thing, i'll be sending out a newsletter tomorrow, including an opening discount coupon, so if you're not on the mailinglist yet, and want to be included, get on it soon!

PS because i was actually a bit nervous doing this (officially open up shop) i stalled time by playing online games.. Wasting time by making lines of three cakes or more (don't ask). I played until i got bored (at least three games okay maybe four) and knew i had to do what i had to do. Write this post.

Oh, ofcourse, if you happen to stumble upon anything that doesn't seem right or is not working probably (i hope/think i got any errors out already) please do let me know! Thankyou.

Here it is: My Book Cover!

Here's for the big unveiling, my first book cover! Don't even know what to say. It's here. All the work is done. Everything is off to the printer. Now it's waiting to get the first copy. I feel overwhelmed. All the work i've done is there. 100 Applique Motifs, cute creative ways to enjoy applique. To be honest, there are even more then 100 motifs in the book, there are actually 103 plus mix and match examples and projects. If you don't know how to do applique, not to worry, i have explained a number of ways to do them.

The cover was a big surprise to me too. I had all the freedom to design all the motifs inside the book, but the cover was designed at the publishing house. It is growing on me.

This is what amazon says about the book:
"Editorial Reviews - Product Description: Crammed with scores of easily transferable designs, this book will teach crafters how to customize everything from T-shirts, skirts, and bed linen, to bags, hats and neckties – even quilts!
From cute creatures to funky fruits and florals, and from retro motifs to “cutting edge” modern designs, you will find endless mix-and-match possibilities in 100 Applique Motifs, as well as a full-range of stand-alone designs. Each applique motif is shown in full color, color wave (fabric selection), method of construction (including embellishment), as well as the black-and-white illustration. Wonderful side-bars provide ways to mix and match the applique, as well as project ideas. Includes sections on tools and materials, tips and techniques, design and pattern directory, project ideas, and resources, as well as an index.

About the Author: Born in Amsterdam, Deborah "Ismoyo" Green traveled around the globe before settling down in New York in 2007. Known for her broad range of creative skills, she prefers spending time with her sewing machine, transforming her illustrations into beautiful applique patches. Encouraged by the readers of her website, she decided to gather her cute and contemporary designs into book form for the first time. She resides in New York City."

Oooh, they mentioned the readers of my website! Yes, that's you! You are on Amazon too! ;)

Figuring out what name to put on my book as my author's name was quite a story. After some consideration decided upon Deborah "Ismoyo" Green. Deborah is the name i got at birth, Green is the name my Love gave me when he married me, and Ismoyo, of course, is the name i go by now, my personal rediscovered creative name.

The book is available for pre-order on most (online) bookstores already, but if you want to get a signed copy, wait for my shop to open (next week?) and put your pre-order in with me plus let me know who to sign it for! I'll do free shipping within the US for all pre-ordered books.
It will be out in the UK on October 31st, in the US and Canada on December 9th!

Promo magnets and shop news

Had some magnet making fun preparing this bunch of ismoyo promo magnets.

Have to think about promotion since it is finally looking like i will open up my online shop soon. Yes really. My latest planned date was first week of August, but maybe that will be a little bit later, probably second week of August. Shop is build and a lot of inventory made. Now i'm tweaking the shop here and there and adding all descriptions, getting all the weights in so shipping costs are calculated correctly and more of the boring finishing touches. I wished i had some better lighting to make the product pictures, definitely something on my wishlist. For now my main priority is to open shop, photos do show products well i'm just critical, you know want to have all backgrounds nice and white instead of off white in some. But let me stop boring you, i'll give a big announcement both here and through the newsletter as soon as the shop is open for business! Whoohoo!

Adorn the fridge!

I've been working on making magnet sets like these. The magnets are made with images from my vintage comic magazines. The original images were used, yes, cutting in the magazines was very difficult at first. Of course I did make scans for my own archive of all pages/images i used. The magazines are so wonderful and were just waiting to be shared with the world in one way or another.

I've mounted them onto thin flat magnet sheets. And laminated them with see through plastic coating for a smooth finish and extra protection.

Top Left: Size: 2"x3.25"
Translation: "And you are getting a big kiss from me!" "Like a BROTHER would do! Well, i haven't come any further than that yet!"
Top Right: Size: 1.5"x2.25"
Lower Left: Size: 2"x2.5"
Lower Right: Size: 4"x3.5"
Translation: "Oh My! What does all that noise mean?"
Top Left: Size: 2.5"x3.75"
Translation: "I am so ashamed! Everybody is laughing at me!"
Top Right: Size: 3"x3"
Translation: "All though i felt like Mister Rochester didn't care about me anymore, i still was incredibly in love with him..."
Lower Left: Size: 2.5"x3"
Lower Right: Size: 3"x3.25"
Translation: "Just what i thought! That nasty uncle Frits has put all the money that uncle Richard sent for Johnny's education in his own pocket!"

Top Left: Size: 4"x3.25"
