Balance between business and crafts

Turning your creativity into a business means you actually have to spend time on building that business. A trip to city hall to register your business is the easy part. Finding a balance between creating and getting your business running is much harder.

I love having my own business, i love earning a living by being creative. But to find the balance? That's whats the hardest part for me. I tried scheduling a couple of hours each day to focus on building the business, leaving the rest of the day to create. I tried. This doesn't work for me. I loose myself (and time!) in what i do. If i'm on a roll working on my crafts or illustrations, i don't keep track of what the clock says. If the creative flow is there, i need to take advantage of it. Same goes for business related tasks. The only thing i love to not have to do, is administration, especially when tax time is there. If there is anything that depresses me about having your own business it's taxes.

Other tasks you can expect to have to focus on when you turn your creativity into a business are:
Marketing - Promoting your business, getting the word out. Be active on forums, post on your own blog and leave comments on other blogs, analyse visitor stats, design promo items like freebies and businesscards, newsletters, and submit links to sites/magazines/blogs.
Inventory - What you have in stock. Build up stock levels and keep track of it, analyze what works and what doesn't. Make sure you have enough supplies, photograph your products, weigh them to calculate shipping, write product descriptions, upload to site.
Customer Care - Treat your customers as your new best friends. Answer emails promptly and have a clear Faq on your site.
Paperwork - Like i said, my least favorite of tasks. but when tax time comes, you'll be happy and proud of yourself if you did keep a good overview of inventory, sales and expenses.
Processing Orders - This is what all your hard work is for, getting your items to your customers! Packing orders, writing personal thank you notes, get packages to the post office (hopefully lots of trips to the PO).

In a perfect tale there would be an amazing assistant doing these things so there would be time for me to only focus on creating. But this is a one-woman-show. I always end up wishing i did more and thinking i could have done more.

Another thing is that there isn't a boss that keeps you on track. Being your own boss is a luxury, but you do have to keep yourself motivated and disciplined. My motto is, if i can work hard for a boss, i can work even harder for myself.

A couple of tips to manage your time:
- Try not to work on lots of things at the same time, focus on one thing until it's finished and start the next. This way you give everything the attention it deserves.
- Keep a reasonable to do list and cross out tasks as they get done. Reasonable in a way that you have all urgent and important things to do, but without overwhelming yourself.
- I like to group tasks that relate and do them back to back. Like a marketing morning or an administration afternoon.
- Make sure you give yourself some downtime. Take a 15 minute breather with a cup of tea and your favorite magazine or go for a short walk, great to get new inspiration and you'll feel refreshed and energized to get back to work.
- An online presence (being on forums and blogs) is important, but beware, it's easy to get 'addicted' and before you know it you've spend half the day reading amazing blogs. (trust me, i've been there)

What do you do to manage your time?

Ismoyo - I read this blog entry and felt like it mirrored everything I'm going through right now with my business! It's so hard to find that balance between "creative time" and "business time." Many of the tips you list above are the very same ones I use to discipline myself. And I also agree - while I'm doing a lot it never seems to feel like enough. It's just so comforting to know I'm not alone in my frustrations! Although I need to add, as frustrating as it can be sometimes, I wouldn't trade what I do for any other job in the world - I LOVE being my own boss and creating the things that I want to create. I look forward to following your progress on the Heart Handmade blog!

I agree with things you said in the post.I try to set days where its all about creating and others for marketing/promoting ..etc...
its very nice to have your own biz because you can set your own hours and change your schedule with what needs to be done.

I find it difficult as I am trying to get the craft thing going but I work full time in another city too. And fit in some sort of social life... I completely agree with your post in every way...

... how do I manage my time... Microsoft Outlook reminders seem to rule my life!

Great tips. I'm just starting out, not quite full time yet, but I'm always looking for helpful ideas on how to manage my time.

I find that the hardest time management for me is when to stop working and relax. I love creating, I could do it constantly, but apparently the husband needs attention too and the house needs cleaning. (:

Oh yeah, i should make time to clean the house too...

oh i totally agree with all this, and you are not alone! i guess in a sense i am a bit lucky that i have no kids to juggle too, and i work from home mostly, so it lets me set my schedule for the most part. but i still have to set aside certain times to make my items, certain times to photograph and edit pics, certain times to promote/blog not easy at all! i think people who dont do this, have no idea how much time we really do invest in it all.

Ismoyo...I guess a lot of us that are trying to run our own business are struggling with the same issues. I am also trying to find that balance and trying to include my kids into the picture. I find for myself especially when I am on a role that it is super hard to pull myself away to do all the non-creative things. I find it easier for me at least to run my day as if I am at the office and set certain times for certain things. But with all that said, I absolutely love what I do and love being my own boss and would never want to trade it for the world. I am really looking forward to following your progress...good luck and thank you for all the great tips :D

It's not that it's all a big surprise to me, i had my own business before i started ismoyo.com, so i kinda knew what to expect. I'm just sharing my experience.
I agree with Missknits a lot, people who don't do this, have no clue how much work it is. They just see the final creations. I do think there are some creative creatures out there who start out and are not thinking of all that come with it. It's better to know upfront what to expect than to get discouraged when it turns out to be a lot of work, a lot!

I used to be on a schedule, which for me worked much better. I was more disciplined in what I was going to do when and actually got things finished.

Then I got lazy and kind of did things whenever the mood struck, which was a bad, bad thing. I'm finding I'm spending too much time online and not enough time making things, and we won't even talk about personal stuff like housecleaning.

One thing I am trying to do over the next month is to ease myself back into a schedule. It's time to start getting productive again. First thing I need to do is what you said about only doing one project at a time. There has to be at least 8 (yes I've lost count) of almost finished projects I lost interest for that I could be trying to sell if I can get the motivation to stick with them.

I loved reading this post, I can relate to your words big time, funny but I just wrote something similar.

Time management is always tricky and yes blogs can be addictive. I've promised myself that once I've finished that part of a project that needs to be finished that day, I'm 'allowed' to have some time to faff about which is either 20 minutes or half an hour.

I can be like you: if I have the right drive I won't stop and work for days on assignments. Marketing is fun to me and is a welcome distraction in between projects :)

How I manage time: my famous to-do-lists ;) Btw I love your motto!!!

There are always things to do when you start a new business. They come with good and bad, but everything turns into a learned lesson and an accomplishment at the end of the day.

Very useful advices on how to organize tasks. Sometimes it's hard to do, especially when it comes to involving creativity in the process, it brings new ideas and sometimes it feels like they turn into a tornado. Until I take a pen, write it all down so I never forget anything, and start setting priorities depending on the time it takes to finish them, the due date, the resources I count with, and so on.

Life's like that, isn't it? A tricky yes rewarding business :D

It is hard to find balance between creating and marketing! I also have a full time job on top of ETSY. I try to make time everyday to promote, and spend some time with the sewing machine!

A useful list, I can understand the difficulties of juggling creativity and business, the time needed for inspiration, and the boring necessary stuff - would know to hear more how others feel.
