It's in the genes
It's obvious where i got my love for decorating from.During my stay in the Netherlands i stayed with my parents and made some photos of my mom's decorating in the living room. I remember growing up never knowing how the home would look like after any day of school. Often she would have re-arranged the entire house while we were gone!
There is always something to discover. Here, a small feathered owl is stuck next to a candle in a flower centerpiece.
Or find these two little birds on the edge of a vase, looking at a silver face of a Buddha.
More birds in a flower centerpiece with a large decorative silver ball in the middle.
A beautiful Buddha statue surrounded by a glass lotus flower, a clear vase filled with beads and lots of flowers. My mom created a whole corner around the Buddha (see first picture of this post).
Another (smaller) Buddha statue on a cabinet. Placed on a round mirror with cones of incense and little beads and knick knacks in front. Surrounded by old photographs of friends and family.Labels: decor

It's good that your back! I'm sure you had a fabulous time with your family and friends.
Your book sounds so exciting! And yes we do seem to have get a lot of things from our parents. Hehe
Hi Issey,
Thanks for stopping by my blog. I really like your photos too. Looks like you had a great time in London and the Netherlands. Now, what is this book you're working on?!
Monica
thank you for your sweet comment regarding my engagement! i truly appreciate it. my apartment lease is up in august, so it made sense to get married & move in together versus postponing it any longer! :)
Nice to see how your mom put Buddha in the right way. As for now, I've seen many western use these kind of statues to decorate their places (shops, house, garden) and sometimes they didn't do it right to our feelings.
As a buddhist, I always feel uncomfortable to see Buddha statue in some shops as a "prop", often "decorated" with stuffs like necklace, bracelet, hat, sunglasses, mp3 player or other "inappropriate" things because we see Buddha statue as a sacred symbol, like Catholic people feel for the holy cross, not just a nice decorating item.
I hope I didn't scare you. ;)
Hi Gracie! How have you been? I will hop to your blog soon to see what you have been up to!
Monica, Thanks for coming to my blog and leaving your comment. I haven't expanded on the content of my upcoming book yet, just a couple of small sneakpeaks in my work in progress section. It's going to be creative and typical ismoyo; cute with a retro looking touch here and there. Will announce more soon!
Funky, two huge things coming up for you! How wonderful. Guess we'll be seeing a lot of funky wedding finds on your site?
Tweaty, no worries, you didn't scare me! ;) lol
I hope my mom's usage of the buddha statues in her decor didn't make you feel uncomftable. She isn't a buddhist, but is asian and very consious of the spirit world and such. She has only respect for Buddha and the buddhists.
I think she did a great job incorporating it in her decor without making it tacky.
Have you seen those plastic bright pink buddha's? I love pink, but that's just wrong. So i totally hear what you are saying.
Your mum's decorating is wonderful, love that she rearranges everything often - so much fun to explore!
It sounds as though your mother and I are decorating soul sisters. My poor husband often comes home from work and I have totally re-purposed a room. I have even been known to put a large sheet of cardboard under a bookcase to slide it from room to room over the course of a few hours. Even my daughter's rooms aren't safe from new little vignettes.
