Photos: Pasar Malam Besar
A while ago i posted a photo collage i made of the Pasar Malam Senang. Currently, the annual 'Pasar Malam Besar' in The Hague is in full swing. Literally that's the 'Large Evening Market'. It's the largest EurAsian festival in the world (20,000 sq meters, over 100.000 visitors). Check the other Pasar post if you don't know and want to know about what it is. I visited the Pasar Malam Besar last Thursday on Ascension Day. It was the first day of the event and it was a day on which everybody has a day off, so it was very crowded with people. Which didn't bother me, but it made it difficult to take photos sometimes. Move, people, move!
The old Singer sewing machine was beautiful. There was a stand with two old machines and loads of gorgeous fabrics. Two Indonesian ladies were on site sewing beautiful tailor made garments, original sarongs and kabaja's.
I made the picture of the books because I'm so proud of my girl who wrote it! And got it published. Okay, the fact that there is a large picture of myself inside and a printed interview about being biracial and a 'third generation Indo in the Netherlands' helps too. Hihi. It's a great book about my generation descendents of Indonesia over here. Lots of beautiful photographs and illustrations. It's called 'Door blauwe ogen'. (Through Blue Eyes) Check out some preview pages!
I also bought a beautiful green beads 'n wood bracelet from one of the Indonesian vendors. I had much fun talking a bit of Bahasa again. It had been a long while and i didn't knew if i could still have a small conversation, but then the words came back to me slowly. I was proud of myself. It has been over 10 years since I've visited my mothers country. (way too long ago!)
I must send my love and support to my people in Indonesia. After the volcano eruption not too long ago, my Mom's island of Java has been hit by a large earthquake. It makes me real sad to see they are getting so little help. But i know they're strong people so they will get through. I hope help will arrive soon for those in need. You're all in my prayers.

Is there any chance you would post your article and photo from the magazine here? would love to see it.
Groetjes Jojo
I might post a scan of 'my pages' in the book. But like Jojo was already talking about it, the size of the book is pretty large. It doesn't fit on my scanner. But when i find myself somewhere with a larger size scanner/copier i will try for sure!
And Jojo, if you are in the neighbourhood of Amsterdam, you must go check out the exposition about the book in Indonesian restaurant Kantjil and the Tiger. I'll make a post about it right away so you have all the info!
